My dearest Sofia,

I asked you what your favorite part of our island vacation was. I thought you might say hiking the rain forest (actually, you weren’t so wild about the rain or the mud there), the volcano (well. . . you didn’t really like the damp dark walk through the lava tube), the many beaches, or visits to your aunty, uncles, and grandparents. But no. It was the leis that you adored most. I don’t blame you. What girly girl wouldn’t love flower necklaces?

I have lots more pictures to share of our vacation. But here are a few of you and your brother on the beach on the Big Island. This is Waikoloa, not far from the tiny beach village where I spent a few of my youngest years, running wild with my siblings. A time of sandy feet, wet bathing suits, peanut butter sandwiches, and long days of children boogie boarding and body surfing: hair barely combed, bodies hot and sticky with salt water and sunscreen. Just like our own holiday.

Love and sandy kisses,

(When you are done here, check out the next letter from the always talented Kristen Ryan Photography.)
